I work a regular job in a warehouse where I rarely need to use my critical thinking skills (I do get to drive a forklift, though). So, I listen to around 40 hours worth of podcasts a week, and here’s what I recommend from this past week...
Get Played - Elden Ring: Shadow Of The Erdtree w/Jordan Morris
Jordan Morris has been making the rounds hawking his new graphic novel Youth Group, and while he’s always a delight on just about every podcast he makes an appearance on (which has been a lot these past two weeks), the real reason that I’m recommending this episode is that Heather’s back! Yay!
Stories about her vacation in Japan, along with the highlight of meeting the legend himself, Hideo Kojima!
It’s such a cozy time listening to the friendship between Heather, Matt, and Nick develop, the video game stuff is almost superfluous (although I was turned onto Dave The Diver because of this show).
Jordan, Jesse, GO! - #851 King Of The Totoros w/Allie Goertz
Episodes with Allie Goertz are among my favorites because she has such a good chemistry with Jordan and Jesse. I still miss her (and Julia Prescott’s) Everything’s Coming Up Simpsons/Round Springfield podcast, but I’m sure there are people who miss the podcast I did, so I guess that’s karma.
Jesse tells everyone about taking one of his kids to an anime convention, Allie tells a story about losing her retainer in a place you wouldn’t expect, and they give us a political message that I think we all can take to heart: “Vote monkey, no matter who!”
Allie was on to promote her Nine Inch Nails cover album, Peeled Back, and she gives a sensitive new perspective to songs that have drilled themselves into the marrow of us longtime fans. It’s really good stuff that’s worth at least an investigative listen.
It Could Happen Here - ICHW Weekly: RNC Edition
Hoo boy... Last week either felt like a million years wallowing in dread, or like just a few blinks because so much was happening none of it stuck in your brain.
This daily podcast assembles their week’s worth of episodes into a chunk for those people that like to binge, and last week, hosts Robert, Garrison, and Sophie wallowed in fear and loathing at the Republican National Convention. This isn’t necessarily a Daily Show style dunking on rubes, per se, but more a look as to what was really going on that the more mainstream media couldn’t gain access to because of their visibility.
Some fun is made, but they’re only human. And it isn’t so much a “punching down” at under-educated believers in the Trump cult of personality — because the people there are mostly higher status, moneyed members of the Republican Party, which is why they’re delegates — but a sort of “laugh or you’ll cry” tension release from staring into the abyss that these people want to throw the country down into.
