I work a regular job in a warehouse where I rarely need to use my critical thinking skills (I do get to drive a forklift, though). So, I listen to around 40 hours worth of podcasts a week, and here’s what I recommend from this past week...
Sixteenth Minute Of Fame - The Black TikTok Strike Of 2021
After listening to her Lolita Podcast earlier this year, I was anticipating Loftus’ return to hosting a podcast. As always, the writing and storytelling that I have come to expect is still top notch, although I was a tad reticent with the subject matter before listening.
Catching up with people “after the meme” seems like a flimsy premise to base a podcast on, but it’s more of a look behind why some of these things fascinated us in the first place.
So, while normally I wouldn’t be all that interested in people dancing on TikTok (even though my daughter in really into dance right now and is on a competition team and I’m slowly being absorbed into the whole Dance World right now), this episode is more about racial bias in tech (and pop culture) and attribution on the internet.
Plus, the theme song by Sadie Dupuis, from Speedy Ortiz and Sad13 fame, is a bop!
Code Switch - The History Of Trans Misogyny Is The History Of Segregation
Pride Month is wrapping up, and we could all stand to learn more so we can be better allies.
Anything I could say about this episode would not do justice, so you’d better just listen for yourself.
With Gourley And Rust - Prom Night
Hearing two friends just talk and joke around really makes me miss my friends...
I tried to record the Dark Matter follow-up episode talking with my friends Harry and Kevin, but not only was it loud in other parts of my house, but where my desktop is located, is just far enough away from the WiFi router, that I get knocked offline a frustrating amount when I’m actually trying to do something online, instead of just fucking around or playing Hearthstone. GarageBand was also being a pain in my ass, so I just nuked everything. Maybe I should have tried using ProTools, but I was just too frustrated at that point.
I have never seen the movie, and it didn’t sound that interesting. But some of the stories they tell and just, the camaraderie, is the reason why people develop para-social relationships with the podcasts they listen to. You learn things about these people you will likely never meet, and your caveman brain lights up because it can’t fathom the technology. And sure, it might be easier to download and listen-in on friends having a conversation, than to actually make an effort and set aside time in two or more people’s schedules so that you can actually hang-out with your friends, but you won’t have to skip past any ads.
