I work a regular job in a warehouse where I rarely need to use my critical thinking skills (I do get to drive a forklift, though). So, I listen to around 40 hours worth of podcasts a week, and here’s what I recommend from this past week…
The Dork Forest - #724 Myq Kaplan and Buddhism
The Dork Forest is not about expertise, but rather enthusiasm. After all, I was a guest once, and got a couple Pearl Jam facts wrong, so… And while I don’t know if Myq got all the facts about Buddhism right, he does give you enough that if your interest is piqued, you want to go find out more. As someone that has been dealing with depression for most of my life, I was always drawn to the “suffering” part of Buddhism. The fact that we all suffer, so why the hell would you want to add more into the world, or not do what you can to lessen it for as many other people as you can. Myq Kaplan is also here on Substack, if you want some more of his comedy.
Code Switch - The Implications Of The Case Against ICWA
ICWA is the Indian Child Welfare Act, and there is a case being brought to the Supreme Court by a white couple (with ample corporate backing) who claims that them not getting the chance to be first in line to adopt Native children (which even though they weren’t, they still got to adopt those children anyway), is discrimination. Ultimately, this is yet another in a long line of attacks on the sovereignty of Indigenous Tribes meant to further the genocide this country was founded on.
Never Not Funny - 3212: Paula Poundstone
Paula Poundstone was one of my favorites back when I was young and would just watch as much Comedy Central as I could, once our family finally got cable. She and Jimmy have great chemistry, and the Alan Rickman story is so great! Again, this is a golden age of Never Not Funny, and even though Jimmy has been having a hard time dealing with health issues, the podcast has never been better.
